June 25 The Korean War begins. Truman signs public law allowing Puerto Rico to write their own constitutiion. "Your Hit Parade" debuts on CBS TV. Edith Samson becomes the first African American representative to the United Nations. Truman orders the Army to seize control of the nation's railroads to prevent strike. China People's Republic denied membership in U.N. Grand Old Opery broadcast on TV for the first time. China intervenes in Korea and begins occupation of Tibet. Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia become independent states in a French Union. Isaac Asimov publishes "I Robot." "Kon Tiki" published. Jack Kerouac publishes "The Town And The City." David Riesman co-authors "The Lonely Crowd." This book describes alienation in a culture of conformity - see "existentalism." Baby Face LeRoy records "Rollin' and Tumblin'" with Muddy Waters.
